Retains Valued Employee with Supported Employment Training
Assistance |
 |
|
Established in 1986 by a group of six expert trial
lawyers, Gwinn & Roby, LLP developed a vision of
legal representation that has guided its growth into
a firm of more than 40 attorneys in Amarillo, Dallas,
and Fort Worth. The firm’s vision is to serve clients
effectively and with integrity to provide the highest quality
of representation in the client's interest.
In order to optimize its Dallas staff’s
time and efforts, Gwinn & Roby hired Cindy Johnston
to perform a variety of clerical duties. She sets
up conference rooms for meetings, distributes faxes,
picks up and distributes mail, and answers phones.
Cindy Johnston recently celebrated her 10-year employment
anniversary with Gwinn & Roby. But there was a time
when this milestone seemed out of reach. Earlier
in her tenure at the firm,
Cindy began to face some challenges with her role. Concerned
that she was not performing at her best, Cindy contacted
Special Care & Career Services’ Supported Employment program
to request training assistance.
An experienced Supported Employment trainer met with
Cindy and her boss at Gwinn & Roby to discuss the
issues affecting Cindy’s job performance. After
assessing these concerns, the trainer developed a retraining
plan that included a detailed set of criteria by which
to measure Cindy’s improvement. The trainer then
began working with Cindy on a daily basis to continually
reinforce the new training goals and ensure that she
learned to achieve them. Once positive change began
to take place, the trainer gradually scaled back the
frequency of his visits from daily to weekly to bi-monthly
and finally to monthly check-ups.
Cindy’s supervisor, Marcus Washington, praised
her contributions to Gwinn & Roby. “Cindy
brings a refreshing outlook that has a positive influence
on everyone in our department.
And her punctuality, commitment, and consistent job
performance are a great example for the team.”
Through Special Care & Career Services’ comprehensive
training efforts, Cindy improved her job performance
as well as her interactions with co-workers. With continued
support from her Supported Employment trainer, she
reached the 10-year employment mark and is still going
strong.

| Understanding
the SCCS Supported Employment Program |
 |
|
The SCCS Supported Employment program can be divided
into four major phases:
- Intake & Assessment
- Job Development
- Job Training
- Continued Support
Individuals can participate in any or all of these phases,
depending on their needs. For example, the lead article
in this newsletter details how Cindy Johnston utilized
our services for training and continued support needs.
Many other clients take advantage of the entire Supported
Employment process. In this and subsequent issues of
Employer’s Link, we will explain the phases of the SCCS
Supported Employment program and their benefit to those
who participate in the process.
In the first phase, Intake and Assessment, the program participant
meets the job consultant who will be working on his or her
behalf. The job consultant spends time getting to know the
individual’s interests and skills and forms a bond with him
or her. Then the consultant assesses the individual’s performance
at several types of jobs to determine what kind of position
will be a good fit. The consultant also observes how the
individual interacts in the community and what kinds of environments
would be most appropriate for his or her work setting. Through
this comprehensive process, the consultant and the program
participant decide on a direction for the job search.
